The Saint Mary's Center Garden

Saint Mary's Center Garden is now a reality –
a dream come true.

 During the construction of our new building, the ground for a garden was reserved. Kitty Wilson, SCN wrote a SCN Mission Grant for the garden and the grant was approved during the year 2014. Dave Eggleston of SMA Louisville (the Chamber of Commerce of St. Matthews) researched equipment and prepared the garden.He planted fruit trees and built eight raised beds. A garden shed was added to the enclosed garden area to house the tools, equipment and mower.

Boy Scouts from St. Patrick's parish created a butterfly garden led by Will Baughman as an Eagle Scout project to benefit St. Mary's Center.

In 2014 and 2015, students planted several types of vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers and onions. When the garden produced the vegetables, they were shared at meals during the day at Saint Mary's Center and were also sent home to be enjoyed with family and friends of SMC.  All the participants feel great about their accomplishments in the garden!

During the 2015 growing season, Dave built a ramp for the students to more easily access the garden from the parking lot. In 2016, we plan to install a receptacle for the collection of water off the roof of the garden shed. The water collected will be used to water the plants.

On April 17 2017, Division 8 Police Dept. painted our garden fence for their Give-A-Day Service project. Also, Middletown Christian Church Volunteers will be helping participants in maintaining the garden.
